Welcome to the lab Anya!

This September, Anya Baklinski joined our lab as a co-supervised BSc Honours Student. Anya’s work is exploring degradation or dissemination of antimicrobial resistance genes in bovine dung facilitated through dung beetle (Onthophagus nuchicornis) activity – she is co-advised with Dr. Natalie Diether (Animal Science & Aquaculture). When Anya is not in the lab, I can typically be found outdoors, on a hike, in a tree, whitewater kayaking, looking at mushrooms and insects, or just soaking-up nature!

Main Photo – This is a late instar of Onthophagus nuchicornis. Anya (Top Left) will be using qPCR to determine how the level of different genes responsible for antimicrobial resistance are modified in the gut of the beetle, compared to the brood ball and remnant dung on the soil surface. This is a nice mixture of laboratory and field work – and kicks off some work in an area that I have found to be personally quite fascinating – the connection between environmental and animal health… cool! 🙂

Super glad to have you on board Anya! Keep on being awesome! -PM
